MUMBAI: Jaideep Swain, a student from Chhattisgarh who had recently joined IIT-Bombay, was found dead in a hotel room in Jogeshwari (West) on Monday. Police are not suspecting foul play and believe he overdosed on anti-depressant tablets.
"There was no suicide note. The exact cause (of death) is unknown, but we found many tablets that are taken for depression," said Amboli police senior inspector Bharat Gaikwad. An accidental death report has been registered and the medicine samples sent to the forensic science laboratory.
The management of the budget hotel chain Treebo called the Amboli police after some guests complained of a foul smell coming from the third floor. When the room was opened with a spare key, Swain’s partly decomposed body was found in the bed.
The 22-year-old MTech student had checked in on Friday. He had left the IIT hostel after telling his roommate he was going home. He was last seen by room service staff on Saturday morning, when he ordered breakfast.
“Swain had checked into the hotel alone. We have found many tablets in the hotel room, apart from his mobile, two laptops and clothes,” said a police officer.
Swain’s father Pradeep reached Mumbai around Monday midnight to claim his son’s body. “I spoke with my son on Saturday and he was normal. I don’t know the exact reason behind him taking the extreme step,” he told TOI.
